The new 2018 Toyota CH-R is a small, funky hatchback that Toyota hopes will have the same affinity for success like its outrageously successful big bro – the RAV4. Some of the strengths the CH-R is well noted for include decent handling, extensive list of standard safety features, impressive ground clearance, functional interior, and a flamboyant exterior design.
The new model comes in two trims – the standard CH-R XLE and the well-equipped CH-R XLE Premium model. Even in its modest form, the 2018 Toyota CH-R XLE comes with a boatload of laudable features that include, automatic headlights, traffic adapting cruise control, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Although we find this list laudable, its high starting price is a complete turn off.
As such, we’d be swift to recommend paying a little more for the top-of-the-range CH-R XLE Premium model. This premium model comes with a desirable list of first-rate features such as a blind-spot monitoring system, heated seats, and auto-folding exterior mirrors, and doesn’t cost much more than the CH-R XLE standard model.
In our opinion, we think it may be worthwhile to pay a bit more for the safety and luxury additions.
One of the most distinctive features of the CH-R lies in its design. It features a high-riding stance, rising window line, and expressive accents, swoops, and lines. The result of these feature combinations is a noticeable and interesting design that may appease the younger, extroverted generation.
The interior is surprisingly voluptuous both at the front and rear with adequate head- and legroom. According to Toyota, the new CH-R is intuitive and further highlights the car’s signature diamond-inspired feel and look. There’re plenty of technologies, infotainment, and convenience features available as well.
Some of these include dual-zone automatic climate control system, a seven-inch touch-screen display audio, Bluetooth connectivity, a 4.2” TFT multi-information display, a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, 3-passenger rear seating, sport fabric-trimmed front bucket seats, and power windows.
As for the exterior, Toyota says this will be the first time a rebellious spirit will meet distinctive styling. The CH-R styling is laden with expressive cues that range from the standard halogen lighting with distinct LED DRL clusters to the vortex-styled eighteen-inch sport alloy wheels down below.
Styling aside, the new 2018 Toyota CH-R comes equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine. The automaker says this engine should be able to give users an optimized mixture of fuel economy and handling performance.
The exterior design is undoubtedly one of the single most element that quickly catches the eye. Its crests, up-kicks, slits, curves will certainly have you studying it for days especially if you’re among those who thought the Nissan Juke took a while to digest.
For starters, the CH-R actually means “Coupe, High Riding,” therefore deserving the title of a crossover SUV. And with its dimensions, the CH-R will find itself in competition with the likes of Mazda CX-3 SUV and Honda HR-V SUV. Speaking of dimensions, the new model measures 61.6 inches – height, 70.7 inches –width, 171.2 inches – length, and 103.9 inches – wheelbase.
Its curb weight stands at 3,300 pounds.
Still on styling, the wheels are vortex-styled and are 18 inches in size. Halogen headlights are standard at the front and rear, and feature a unique cluster LED DRL. Around back, the CH-R continues the unmistakable-silhouette theme thanks to a cantilevered rear spoiler that also adds an additional touch of attitude.
Finally, wrapping up the exterior design code are the unique R-code color designs that make the 2018 CH-R stand out from the rest of the pack for the right reasons. The R-Code color design consists of the following colors – Blue Eclipse Metallic, Radiant Green Mica, and Ruby Flare Pearl.
2018 Toyota CH-R Interior Changes
Inside, the vehicle continues the same level of creativity as that expressed on the outside. One area that’s guaranteed to catch the attention of many is perhaps the MeZone – center pod of controls. It is stylish and features unconventionally shaped set of knobs, switches, and controls for the TFT screen.
The design theme used inside is a diamond pattern that continues from the exterior. The headliner and hard-plastic lower door panels feature the diamond moldings resulting in a visually appealing design silhouette.
In addition to the premium diamond moldings, the CH-R also features premium materials on various surfaces. For instance, the shift knob is satin-plated, and the steering wheel leather-trimmed. The result is a mixture of sportiness and elegance.

2018 Toyota CH-R Engine Specs
Whereas the CH-R is marketed as a crossover SUV, the vibe might start to fizzle down upon learning that it only comes with a single engine beneath its hood. And to make things even worse, the engine neither delivers a good fuel economy nor a brisk acceleration. Don’t even consider getting frisky in muddy fields, or on rocky trails.
Fitted beneath its hood is a 2L four-cylinder engine rated at 144 hp and 139 lbs. ft. of torque that is then transferred by the sole CVT system to the front wheels. Although there’s an available all-wheel drive for the Japanese and European market. The U.S –spec model is only offered with the FWD.
On the safety front, the Toyota CH-R 2018 is available with features such as a blind-spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. Working in conjunction, these two help identify vehicles that you may be blind to. Also offered are a whopping ten airbags for the driver and the passenger.
There’s also the star safety system that Toyota says should help drivers avoid accidents by enhancing traction, braking and more. And finally, the automaker says every model comes constructed with an advanced, high-tensile strength steel meant to increase body rigidity and handling.
2018 Toyota CH-R Price & Release Date USA
According to figures released by Toyota, the new CH-R XLE price starts at roughly 23,500USD inclusive of delivery fees while CH-R Premium adds 850USD on top of that.
Both vehicles should be expected on lots sometime in May 2017 as 2018 year models.
Three of its top rivals include the Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and the equally polarizing Nissan Juke. The 2018 Toyota C-HR certainly stands out from the crowd in various ways with the avant-garde exterior styling probably being the loudest among them.
It’ll be interesting to see how it holds up against the aforementioned vehicles which are similarly capable.
